In the Arabian Nights, a man who compels
strangers to carry him until they drop,
encountered by Sinbad the Sailor on his fifth
voyage. Sinbad escapes by getting him drunk.
The Old Man of the Sea is also used in Greek
mythology to describe Proteus, an attendant
of the sea god Poseidon.
